By Victorine BIY, Cameroon Tribune
The 51st Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank, AfDB ended on May 27, 2016 in Lusaka, Zambia.
Curtains to the 51st Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank, AfDB, and the 42nd Meetings of the Board of Governors of the African Development Fund dropped on May 27, 2016 in Lusaka, Zambia with delegates resolving to intensify engagements
on the Bank’s operations and development issues.
Meetings held on the theme, « Energy and Climate Change » with focus on five critical African Development issues. The high five priorities-light up and Power Africa, Feed Africa, Industrialise Africa, Integrate Africa and Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa featured prominently in discussions and commitments. The Governors endorsed the points, expressing satisfaction with progress made towards operationalising them. They were also impressed with the recent approval of the Bank Group Strategies for the New Deal on Energy for Africa and the jobs for youth in Africa.
They however, called for their speedy implementation. The AfDB reports that the strategies and initiatives focus on inclusive and green growth. This notwithstanding, delegates challenged the institution to continue its operational focus on infrastructure, regional economic integration, private sector development, governance and accountability, skills and technology, as well as fragility and gender issues.
The President, AfDB Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, in his closing statement, recalled that among the five priorities- “To light up and power Africa”-got over 50 per cent votes, while the other four all took some 10 per cent each. This was telling of how the energy deficiency is the crux of the continent’s challenge, and that energy sufficiency will be the motor to drive and to complete Africa’s transformation. The bank’s management and staff pledged commitment to help end the embarrassment of Africa’s energy poverty, and supply the energy that will unleashed the full potential of the continent.
The next Annua meetings will be held at Ahmedabad, about 775kilometres west of New Delhi, the capital of India, from May 22-26, 2017.
