New Government To Boost Economic Growth

Economy-related ministries now have fresh blood to translate the Head of State’s “Greater Accomplishments” vision into reality.
The new government put in place last night by the Head of State, Paul Biya, has particularly overhauled the economic sector. Almost all the ministries in charge of economy issues have charged hands. This is evidently in relation to the Head of State’s vision to accelerate economic growth and catapult the economy to emergence by 2035.
In the Ministry of Finance, Essimi Menye has been replaced with Alamine Ousmane Mey, who until now was the General Manager of one of the country’s vibrant financial institution, Afriland First Bank. He inherits the ministry at a time government is raising money through treasury bonds to ensure liquidity of the State treasury ahead of announced transformation of the entire country into a vast construction site by 2012. The first phase of the operation which generally targets FCFA 50 billion by December 31, 2011, has fetched FCFA 8 billion already.
As for Essimi Menye, he moves to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Head of State, Paul Biya, has from the Ebolowa national Agro-pastoral Show in January 2011, the presidential election campaign speeches and the November 3 inaugural speech, spoken of the immense potential of agriculture as the forerunner of Cameroon’s economic performance. Moving the country to second-generation agriculture remains a challenge.
In the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Nganou Djoumessi Emmanuel, formerly Assistant Secretary General at the Prime Minister’s Office will continue from where Louis Paul Motaze has left. His major task will certainly be to ensure an effective implementation of the country’s development plan contained in the Growth and Employment Strategy Paper.
Meanwhile Bello Bouba Maigari in the Ministry of Tourism has a challenge of moving beyond the slightly over 500,000 tourists per annum that moved the country to a tourism destination. In the Ministry of Water and Energy Resources, Atangana Kouna Basile, formerly Director General of the country’s water utility, Camwater, will strive to step up water and energy supply to boost targeted industrialisation.
Mining is gradually taking shape in the country, especially with “Operation Gold” and the new Minister of Industries, Mines and Technological Development, Bonde Emmanuel, together with the Secretary of State, Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, will work to ensure that the over 60 per cent of the country’s mining potentials that is yet to be known is explored for a meaningful socio-economic development. Ngole Philip Ngwese for Forestry and Wildlife and Dr. Taiga for Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries are also new entrants to engender sustainable growth through their respective ministries.
These and other ministers have a challenge to make true President Biya’s campaign promises to the nation.
